There are video games that arrive quietly, and then there are games that seem to become controversial before most people have even played them. Scam With Your Friends belongs firmly in the second category. On the surface, the premise sounds like an absurd multiplayer comedy. Look a little closer, however, and the game’s popularity raises a much more interesting question: why does this particular joke feel so immediately recognizable?
The premise is simple enough. You and your friends operate a fictional scam call center, work together, hit targets, and try not to get fired. It’s the sort of deliberately ridiculous concept that could have disappeared into the enormous pile of indie games released every year. Instead, it attracted significant attention.
That raises a question the trailer alone can’t answer: what exactly are people responding to?
